But for those of us who log countless crunches to no avail and are tempted by as-seen-on TV neck-tightening devices, new localized fat-reduction treatments are on the horizon. No surgery required.ATX-101, a new injectable treatment for unwanted submental adipose tissue (also known as fat that causes a double chin) was a hot topic at the annual meeting for the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery last October in Chicago. Also known as deoxycholate (DOC), ATX-101 is a naturally occurring salt from the gall bladder that promotes dietary fat digestion in the small intestine. As a scientist, a dermatologist-in-training, and someone fortunate enough to have my own double chin, I was fascinated to learn more about this treatment.Originally noted in the 2004 Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, Adam Rotunda, MD replica prada mihalis , and Michael Kolodney, MD, PhD, began using ATX-101 (formerly an injectable treatment for benign fattty tumors) to reduce small collections of fat under the skin. Promising initial results from phase III clinical trials carried out in Europe and published in the British Journal of Dermatology in February 2014 show that injection of ATX-101 is better than placebo in reduction of submental fat and improvement in overall appearance—as measured by both dermatologist assessment and patient satisfaction.Sounds like we can all keep our chins up for future fat-reducing prospects.***Amanda Zubek is a Resident Physician in Dermatology at the Yale New Haven Hospital.
